Extraction Post Op Instructions

How long do I keep pressure on the extraction site?

After an extraction, keep pressure for at least an hour with the gauze that we have provided. If there still is bleeding after an hour, replace the gauze we have provided with new gauze. Keep pressure until the bleeding has stopped. Please contact us if you are unable to stop the bleeding.

Will I develop any swelling?

A small amount of swelling increasing until the 3rd day post extraction is normal. If there is a significant amount of swelling, please contact Eric Heim Dental.

Will there be pain after an extraction?

Dr. Heim will prescribe any necessary medication after the extraction to minimize the discomfort after having a tooth extracted. If there is a significant amount of pain, please call our office.

How do I prevent a dry socket?

The best way to prevent a dry socket is to have a blood clot form by keeping pressure on the extraction site for an hour plus after the extraction. Please avoid any activity that may dislodge the blood clot including drinking through a straw and smoking. Smoking can dissolve the blood clot. A dry socket typically develops 3-7 days after an extraction. Please call our office if a dry socket develops.

How do I know if there is an infection after an extraction?

Post extraction infection typically forms in 1 to 2 weeks. There will be a bad taste and swelling in your gums. Please call our office immediately if an infection develops.
